babbs shelton arrestsGRAHAM, Ky. (7/25/19) — Investigation into a large-scale, drug-trafficking operation has led western Kentucky authorities into Muhlenberg County cracking down on the escalating synthetic marijuana problem.

Kentucky State Police Drug Enforcement Special Investigations and Madisonville-Hopkins County Vice/Narcotics detectives developed two primary suspects during the course of the investigation — Darrin Shelton, 41, and Penny Babbs, 42, both of 9415 U.S. 62, Graham.

After making controlled buys of large quantities of synthetic marijuana using confidential informants with both suspects, a search warrant was granted, said police.

Early yesterday morning, police executed a search at the Graham residence finding approximately 15 pounds of synthetic marijuana, digital scales, packaging material, cash, a small amount of marijuana, chemicals used to manufacture synthetic marijuana and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Shelton advised detectives that he makes and distributes synthetic marijuana, police said. The chemicals used to manufacture the synthetic marijuana are imported from outside the U.S., said authorities.

Shelton was charged with trafficking in synthetic drugs – second offense, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana; Babbs was charged with trafficking in synthetic drugs – first offense, drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and on a parole violation warrant.

Both are being held in the Muhlenberg County Detention Center.
