barnMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/17/19) — Muhlenberg County 911 is reminding citizens of upcoming activities in the county that might cause undue alarm.

“It’s tobacco-curing season,” said 911 telecommunicator David Knight, “which means tobacco barns across the county will be smoking. Those barns are not on fire. The smoke you see is a byproduct of the tobacco-curing process.”

For more than a century, tobacco farmers in the area have been growing, harvesting and curing tobacco, said Knight. The curing process for dark-fired tobacco requires tobacco leaves to be subjected to smoke from a smoldering wood fire.

“So, remember, if you see smoke rising out of a barn, it’s just a farmer getting his harvest ready for market,” Knight said. “If you see flames, call 911.”
