10455518 300x300 1vet ffffffLEBANON, TN., — Dr. Robert H. Divine, 90, a native of Muhlenberg County, KY passed away April 9, 2018 at the Quality Rehab and Health Center in Lebanon, Tennessee where he had resided for the last few years. Born February 9, 1928, he was the youngest son of the Reverend Hosea Divine and Bertha Vincent Divine.

In 1946, he joined with his brothers in founding Divine Brothers Lumber Company and was a partner and construction manager there for more than a dozen years. He served as a front-line infantryman in Korea, and on one occasion was trapped behind enemy lines during the massive Spring Chinese Offensive in the summer of 1951.

In 1960 at the age of 32 he entered Indiana University, where he earned degrees in mathematics and education. He taught high school mathematics for 2-year stints in New Albany, Indiana, Tonopah, Nevada, and Nogales, New Mexico, while concurrently working summers to earn a master's degree in mathematics at Murray State University. In the late 1960s, Mr. Divine became a teacher for U.S. Department of Defense schools overseas, teaching successively at American military bases in Germany, Japan, and the Philippines. He earned a Ph.D. in education from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila in the 1970s and retired from teaching in 1983.

In retirement he lived mostly in Nashville, Tennessee, and indulged a variety of interests, supporting democracies in South America, co-founding and serving as president of the Tennessee Hemlock Society, teaching countless ballroom dance classes, and founding, funding, and serving as the first chairperson of the Divine Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation that is today providing college scholarships to descendants of the extended Divine-Vincent family.

He is survived by more than 20 nieces and nephews, many grand-nieces and nephews, and his devoted companion Jane Fain.

Mr. Divine was preceded in death by his parents and by 8 brothers and sisters Renova Divine, Joe Thomas Divine, Charlie Divine, Estel Divine, Ned Divine, Edith Divine Noffsinger, Willa Divine Mercer, and Helen Ruth Divine Jordan.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 1pm at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City.

Visitation will begin at 11am on Saturday at the funeral home. At Mr. Divine's direction, his body was donated to the Vanderbilt University Medical School. The Divine family requests that all memorial gifts should go to the college scholarship fund of the Divine Foundation administered by Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky, and now providing support for scholarship winners at universities in several states. (The Divine Foundation is a 501(c)3 corporation registered in the state of Kentucky.)
