KSP UPDATE: SLAUGHTERS, Ky. (6/11/18) — Kentucky State Police Trooper Rob Austin reported an individual had been metal detecting in an empty field today, when he discovered the grenade. He then transported the explosive to the Downtown Market in Slaughters, and notified law enforcement of his find.

KSP responded, set up a perimeter and evacuated the area this afternoon, Austin said. Kentucky 138, U.S. 41-N, New Hope Road and the railway were shut down for more than an hour.

Hazardous Devices Investigator Steven Smith was at the scene to render the grenade safe.

KSP asks that people do not touch or transport any possible explosive. If found, individuals should contact law enforcement immediately and make sure everyone stays as far away from the device as possible.

Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Hanson Fire Department, Clay Police Department and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

UPDATE: HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (6/11/18) — Jacob Joiner, owner of Tine's Downtown Market near Slaughters at the Webster County line, said a man found a grenade while metal detecting off Kentucky 630.

The man brought the grenade to the Tine's parking lot and called police, said Joiner. Police had the area and store evacuated.

At approximately 4:20 p.m., police detonated the live grenade in a field.

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (6/11/18) — An area of Kentucky 138 and U.S. 41 near the Hanson/Slaughters area has been cordoned off by authorities.

Kentucky State Police responded to the scene after receiving a report that a possible grenade was found by a resident in that area.

KSP says the agency is looking into whether it is authentic. Until then, they’re taking no chances. Surrounding residents have been evacuated.
