scam alert red 300OHIO COUNTY, Ky. (6/10/19) — Ohio County Sheriff Tracy Beatty said in a press release today that an apparent scammer is using a fake name and account to contact potential victims via Craigslist and his office has been receiving complaints.

The scam involves a check being sent from a business account to people selling items on Craigslist for more than the amount of money the seller is asking for the item. The scammer is then asking the seller to wire the excess amount to back to them when the check is cashed.

OCSO cautions everyone to use be careful when receiving checks in the mail unexpectedly or for large amounts; if someone asks for payment by gift card, then it is likely it is a scam; never send personal information to someone that you do not know; talk to senior family members to make sure they are not falling victim to scams; and, it it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
